I’ve been working on this little spot behind my studio for the last few weeks. The hollyhocks have been coming in beautifully there for the last couple years. I’d tried – unsuccessfully – to grow the hollyhocks in the past and had all but given up. Then, the year mom first came to stay with us, they just took off! Mom and I enjoyed watching them as they exploded with color. Until this this year I’d just let the area go on it’s own, natural, merry way. But then last year I shot some wedding pictures in Mayville at the Rainbow Gardens and got inspired. In the middle of this huge winding garden, they’d constructed this fantastic natural arch out of tree branches – and growing all around it? Hollyhocks. It was just a beautiful canopy of color, very naturally controlled. Continue Reading »

In the last couple weeks, neighbor Tom and George’s barn has systematically begun to dismantle. They’d said last year that the barn was going to have to come down – so it wasn’t like it was a surprise or anything. But, seeing it really is sad. This state of partial dismemberment is like a double edged sword… The good thing is that it means parts of this wonderful barn will go to live on in other ways. The bad thing is that it just looks sad and lonely right now. Why is that, I wonder… That when you strip a building of it’s windows, doors or siding, that it begins to look so alone. OK, so I admit it… I am falling just a little behind in my quest to stay on top of the wedding processing! Whew. But, steadily making progress!
Allison and Justin were married last weekend in Grand Forks. A VERY chilly June day here in good old ND with a high of about 55. Burrr. But, everyone managed to fair out well and the overcast day provided us with many beautiful images. For me it was a particularly fun day – I’ve had the honor of photographing some of the other members of Justin’s family…. Bob, Jeremy and then Bob’s sister-in-law’s weddings. Bob was missing on Saturday (he and Megan had a baby just days before the wedding – congratulations you two!) but it was just like working with family by this stage. Many thanks guys! Great seeing you all – hope you love the images. The following is just a preview. I’ll have (many) more to follow in the coming days! Continue Reading »
